Purpose

"To read without reflecting is like eating without digesting." -Edmund Burke

I am constantly amazed by people that don't "get" anything out of reading. Reflection should be a part of life. We should reflect on our feelings, our thoughts, our actions and dreams; all aspects of our lives should be reflective. At least, that is the idea I tried to sell my juniors today.

Funny thing... no one was buying.

Reading is great. I prefer fiction. Fiction has words and passages we can analyze to find new meaning. Nonfiction (books about media and mass comm) are harder to analyze. They're all about theory and ethics. Don't we learn most about theory and ethics once we EXPERIENCE the job? I'm sure it helps to discuss these a little in school, but I truly believe that the real deal starts once we get out of the classroom and into the workforce...

Oh, to read fiction every day...
